David McCulloh – PHD, HCLD (High-Complexity Clinical laboratory Director, C.C. – Director of Clinical Science at Reproart
- David McCulloh, PhD, HCLD (High-Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director), C.C., serves as Director of Clinical Science at three branches (Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi) of the Reproart Georgian-American Center for Reproductive Medicine. At the same time, he leads the Andrology Laboratory at the Biogenetics Corporation in New Jersey, and serves as Assistant Laboratory Director and Research Committee Chair at the New York University Fertility Center (NYUFC). In addition, David is the interface between NYUFC and Redshift Technologies, the creator of the Center’s electronic medical record system. He holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine;
- Since joining NYUFC in 2012, David McCulloh has coauthored 15 peer-reviewed publications and 3 textbooks;
- David McCulloh’s work experience includes directing ART (assisted reproductive technology) laboratories for two decades: University Reproductive Associates [and its predecessor, the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center] in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey; Offices for Fertility and Reproductive Medicine, in Greenwich Village, New York; and the Fertility Institute at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, in Brooklyn, New York;
- Prior to his clinical endeavors, he was involved in basic research, investigating sperm-egg interactions, sperm entry, oocyte maturation and egg activation using cellular electrophysiological methods in sea urchin eggs at the University of Miami School of Medicine, in Miami, Florida. His research also covers the foregoing in rabbit oocytes (in vitro) at the University of Maryland and the USDA’s Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, in College Park/Beltsville, Maryland;
- He has been faculty member at the New Jersey Medical School within the University for Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in Newark, New Jersey; the Oregon Health Sciences University, in Portland, Oregon; and the University of Miami School of Medicine. Reproart Success Rates
In the past, the notion of IVF only meant transferring unfrozen embryos within the process of egg aspiration, which was expected to result in pregnancy. This is why clinics tried to avoid keeping embryos in laboratories for more than three days. The method of freezing, on the other hand, was quite underdeveloped, so it was imperative to transfer embryos as part of the egg aspiration process, because freezing undermined their vitality and hardiness.
Over time, however, as the method of freezing developed (the method of vitrification—freezing), and new solutions were introduced for freezing and ensuring an embryo’s transformation into a blastocyst (5-6 days), the rates of pregnancy skyrocketed in both frozen and unfrozen embryos.

Our clinic has developed and successfully adopted blastocyst vitrification (rapid freezing method) with a 98% rate of survival and a 65% rate of pregnancy regardless of age.
Patients are often mistaken believing that transferring the embryo outside the unfrozen cycle decreases their chances of pregnancy. In reality, however, given their health conditions, the embryo absolutely must be frozen, while the uterus is being properly prepared, and only after that, the frozen embryo can be transferred. This way, the embryo increases chances of pregnancy and not the other way around.
Add to that preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening (24 chromosomes analyzed, and 22 autosomes and chromosomes X, Y screened), and you will have even better chances at successful in vitro fertilization and much lower failed pregnancy risks.
The experience of numerous clinics confirms that using frozen embryos increases pregnancy rates, giving much better results than unfrozen embryos transferred during the same cycle.
